Self-care for mind, body, and spirit: 5 self-care tips for the creative entrepreneur

Your health is everything.

If you’ve followed me on social media for awhile you may know that I was diagnosed with both endometriosis and Hashimoto’s disease, which is a thyroid and an autoimmune disorder. Before being diagnosed I was literally having all the symptoms: I was stuck in bed for weeks at a time thanks to endometriosis, and suffered from extreme fatigue and exhaustion because of Hashimoto’s. The good news is that I was completely able to transform both of these things through health interventions and trying to eat the right way, and doing things that took care of my body.

What does this have to do with running a business? As a business owner I know it’s so tempting to put your customer first and to keep hustling and building things up in your business, but I’m here to tell you that if you don’t make your health a priority then you truly having nothing.

Let me repeat that: if you don’t make your health a priority, you have nothing.

So let’s talk about some actionable things you can do to keep healthy so you can keep building your empire!

Listen to your body

Symptoms are just messages from your body saying “help me!” It’s easy to ignore them or chalk them up to something else, but I want to encourage you to tap into that intuitive and trusting part of yourself, listen to your body, get curious, and seek out help where you can.

Be your own health advocate

So often in our current healthcare society we need to be our own advocates and trust that we know our body and what it needs. Sometimes that might mean standing up to your doctor or doing your own research to find a plan that works for you, or incorporating alternative medicine into your care.

Track your health

Just like you track you ConvertKit stats, you also need to be tracking your health stats. You don’t know the health of your business until you know the numbers, and your body is the same. 

That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go and get bloodwork done this second, but you can start with tracking how many headaches you get a week, or how often you feel terrible after eating a certain food, or even whether you’re feeling anxiety at certain points during the week. Then make the correlations where possible – maybe you had high anxiety one day because you only slept 3 hours the night before. Track the good days too! If you’re having a really good day and you haven’t felt like that in a really long time, ask yourself what changed?

Some really common symptoms that you want to be watching out for are indigestion,  headaches and migraines, low energy, brain fog, skin reactions, anxiety and depression, and even acne.

Take time for self-care

You are your business’ most important employee, and you need to treat yourself as such!

Oftentimes people think of self-care as needing to decompress in a bath, or get a pedicure, but self-care is really about diving deeper and thinking about what really feeds your soul. What recharges your batteries? And what depletes your batteries, and how can you balance this out a little more and remove some of the things off your plate that are draining you, and add more of the things to your plate that fill you up?

Get Practical with Self-Care For Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

Mind: what are the books that you’re reading, the podcasts that you like to listen to, or the people that you like to have intellectual conversations with? What are the things that really stimulate your brain and get those creative juices flowing? Creativity is actually something that boosts our endorphins and helps us feel fulfilled

Body: What are the foods that you’re eating, or the ways that you’re moving your body, or the amount of sleep that you’re getting?

Spiritual: Are you a religious person who finds peace in praying? Or do you prefer more of the introspective areas of spirituality and like to whip out the tarot cards every once in awhile?

Separate these layers out and then get super practical about creating a self-care strategy or a 90-day plan to implement self-care routines into each of these categories. Even better if you can find someone to help keep you accountable!

Take some time this week to figure out how to add some health care in your life. Maybe it’s as simple as a 15-minute walk every morning, or trying to eliminate refined sugars in your diet. Test things out and figure out what makes you feel your brightest. Taking time to take care of your health is the true foundation to running a thriving business!
